5 tips to make sure nothing gets lost in the move

Posted on December 19, 2016 in House Moving, Melbourne Removals, Moving Tips
We've come up with five tips to make sure your move is loss-free.

Losing your belongings can make you feel like you're losing the plot. But you're not alone, a survey by Esure revealed that out of 3,000 respondents, people spent on average 10 minutes a day looking for something they'd lost.

When moving house in Melbourne, if you don't take the proper care, you could spend far longer looking for whatever's gone missing. To help you avoid spending hours rummaging through boxes and combing driveways, we've whipped up five handy tips to make sure nothing goes missing on moving day.

5 tips to make sure nothing gets lost in the moveAre you organised enough for your move?

1. Take inventory beforehand and put the important stuff aside

Before you start packing everything in samesy cardboard boxes, it might be worth taking an inventory of the important stuff, and keeping it in a separate container. Simply list the items that are valuable to you, make sure you've got them all on hand then pack them in a separate and easily identifiable box.

Pack the list on the top of the box, and transport it yourself if you have room. That way you can have peace of mind knowing that you have your most precious possessions on hand and well-organised throughout the entire move.

Pack by room and label clearly

It might be worth taking an inventory of the important stuff, and keeping it in a separate container.

This one's a gimme, but you'd be surprised at how many people forget to pack by room. Doing so makes your life far easier at the other end, as you'll simply have to refer to the label, then carry each box to its respective room for easy unpacking.

You can go one step further here and use clear plastic or zip lock bags to separate items from each section of the room. That way when you've set up the big stuff like furniture, you'll know exactly where everything goes without spending an age to think about it.

Take the opportunity to cut the non-essentials

There's a growing school of thought that says having fewer possessions makes life more simple, making you realise what's truly important. We don't know about that, but we're pretty sure that getting rid of some of your unnecessary things will make moving easier, and reduce clutter in your new home.

Take the time to get rid of the items in your old home that you don't think are necessary when you move. Less things to move means less things to lose after all!

Be prepared when the movers show up

Nothing leads to lost possessions quicker than rushing to pack in the last minute. Start the process as long as a week beforehand and aim to finish packing the day before at the latest. That way when your movers show up you won't be madly shoving everything into boxes, risking the loss of your precious stuff.

Plus getting ready in advance will reduce the stress of moving when it finally comes to the big day.
